Kansas City’s three-day celebration of art, food, culture and music returns, featuring 240 artists, 22 Plaza restaurants, three live music stages and much more

The beloved Plaza Art Fair, Kansas City’s three-day celebration of art, food, culture and music, will return to Country Club Plaza Sept. 21-23. This marks the 87th year for the Plaza Art Fair, and the 2018 event is once again presented by Saint Luke’s Health System.

The Plaza Art Fair continues to be a place where people come together to celebrate art and each other. The event covers nine city blocks, greets a crowd of more than 250,000 and features 240 artists, three live music stages and 22 restaurant booths.

“We love that so many people look forward to the Plaza Art Fair each year and we are honored to help keep this favorite tradition alive,” said Meredith Keeler, general manager of Country Club Plaza. “The Plaza Art Fair truly is a neighborhood celebration. It is inspiring to see so many different businesses, groups and volunteers come together to create this fun event for the city.”

The Art

The Plaza Art Fair is a top-ranked art event with a highly competitive jury process. Country Club Plaza receives submissions from more than 1,400 artists who present their best work in hopes of becoming an exhibitor at the nationally recognized event.

The Plaza Art Fair’s celebration of the arts showcases the finest works in ceramics, digital art, fiber, glass, printmaking, jewelry, metalwork, 2D and 3D mixed media, painting, pastels, photography, sculpture and wood.

The Food

There is no shortage of good food at the Plaza Art Fair. Twenty-two Plaza restaurants offer culinary specialties that serve as the perfect complement to the beautiful artwork on display. Art Fairgoers have the opportunity to taste delicacies in any of the fair's three restaurant areas: along Ward Parkway between Broadway and Pennsylvania; along Broadway between Nichols and Ward Parkway; and on Central Street between Nichols and Ward Parkway.

The Music

Dance the night (and day) away and hear Kansas City’s favorite local musicians playing at the three live music stages found throughout the Plaza Art Fair. Fifty bands will play throughout the weekend. The Polsinelli stage is located on the Wornall Bridge. The INK Live! stage is located at Ward Parkway and Pennsylvania and the 90.1 KKFI community stage is located near Starbucks on Central and Nichols Road. All stages will feature a variety of dynamic, local bands all weekend long.

2018 Featured Artist

The 2018 Plaza Art Fair featured artist is Amanda Outcalt of Norfolk, Virginia, booth 337. Outcalt has a degree in painting and drawing as well as a degree in metalsmithing. All of her passions came together when she began working in intaglio printmaking. Her pieces tell stories about life, memories and relationships.

Presenting Sponsor

For more than 135 years, Saint Luke’s Health System has been at the heart of Kansas City health care. Just like Country Club Plaza, they’re a Kansas City original. That’s why the organization is honored to support another longtime tradition, the Plaza Art Fair. This is the fourth year Saint Luke’s Health System has served as the presenting sponsor of the event.

“Saint Luke’s is proud to be a part of the Plaza Art Fair again this year, said Julie Quirin, Saint Luke’s Health System chief operating officer and senior vice president. “Kansas City is passionate about its art, culture, food and music and we are grateful to have the opportunity to support this iconic Kansas City tradition and connect with our community at the same time.”

Art Fairgoers can relax and refresh in the Saint Luke’s Health System tent, located in the heart of the fair at Broadway and Nichols Road. They can also bring their kids, grab a balloon and enter to win prizes, including an original artwork from Plaza Art Fair featured artist Amanda Outcalt.

Saint Luke’s Health System is once again hosting the giant GO LIFE sculptures – a wonderful photo opportunity – as well as the Nursing Mothers' Lounge in its new location at RE, at the corner of Nichols Road and Wyandotte. The Lounge provides mothers with a private, comfortable space to nurse or bottle-feed their babies. This area is open Saturday 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Additional Partners

While the Country Club Plaza management team produces the Plaza Art Fair, it truly is a community event and is made possible by many Plaza-area businesses, organizations and volunteers. Several Plaza neighbors pitch in to support the weekend festivities, including Saint Luke’s Health System, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, KSHB-TV (41 Action News), and new this year, Polsinelli and Pembroke Hill School.

Polsinelli, one of the largest law firms in the U.S. with more than 825 attorneys in 21 offices nationwide, is celebrating over 45 years on the Country Club Plaza and sponsoring the main music stage. The Polsinelli stage is located on the Wornall Bridge and will feature local bands throughout the three days.

Pembroke Hill School, Kansas City’s largest independent college preparatory school for students ages two through 12th grade, is hosting the Pembroke Hill Children’s Art Booth. Themed ‘Pedal. Paint. Play.’ the Pembroke Hill Children’s Booth features art for the mind and body. Kids can pedal a bicycle while spinning art, explore the sensory table, capture the magical scarves and settle their inner self with Zen-like coloring activities.
